Light on Water

Modern Apartments arrives on Dark Entries with Light on Water, an LP of eight instrumental cosmic-kosmische analogue synth workouts. It’s the project of Ryan Ambridge, best known for Linea Aspera and Lust Pattern, stepping away from greyscale electronics into something brighter, looser and more open.

Film is central to the record’s feel. Ambridge works as a projectionist, screening archival 35mm and 16mm prints, and that sense of texture and time runs through these tracks. Old rhythm boxes and post-punk angles keep things grounded, balancing soft drift with firmer, more structured movement.

That push and pull comes through on Completely, where the icy minimalism of John Foxx meets the wandering groove of Cluster, and on Light on Water, which leans toward the sun-bleached warmth of Roedelius. Artwork comes from Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh.
