Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette gets a brilliant, off-kilter reimagining from Sofia Coppola, who brings a candy-coloured palette, dreamy synth-pop, and Converse high-tops to eighteenth-century Versailles. It is an exuberantly subversive, extravagantly stylised anti-biopic centred on one of history’s most infamous and possibly most misunderstood figures.

Kirsten Dunst plays Marie Antoinette as a rebellious teenage princess, married to the awkward young dauphin of France, played by Jason Schwartzman, who is soon crowned King Louis XVI. Isolated in a royal court full of scandal and intrigue, she pushes back against both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, at least for a while.
