No Future: Sex, Seditionaries and the Sex Pistols, The Hospital, London 2004. 220x240mm. Printed card wrappers, 128pp (shrink-wrapped) colour and b/w illus. A richly embroidered essay by the novelist and critic Michael Bracewell introduces this well-illustrated publication produced by Stolper Wilson to accompany the exhibition of their collection at The Hospital in 2004 and at Urbis, Manchester. Bracewell’s essay alongside further explanatory texts by Andrew Wilson provide an analytical commentary on the iconography and aspirations of punk as revealed through the clothes designed by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, the inflammatory graphic design of Jamie Reid, the music of the Sex Pistols and the media manipulation of McLaren. This long out-of-print publication suggests how their collaborative project defined punk and still reverberates through the worlds of music, fashion, art and graphic design.
