Peanut

Jared Mattson, of the Mattson 2, makes his debut solo outing on Toro y Moi's Company Records, with Toro y Moi also jumping in on production. The album, Peanut, was not originally intended to break away from the Mattson 2.

Jared was working on new songs in the winter of 2019-2020, planning for the next album with his brother Jonathan Mattson. However, as the pandemic hit, Jared found himself holed up in his home studio, realizing that these songs were meant for a solo project. Inspired by guitar work from reggae stalwarts and the Police, Jared wanted to create an album with a prominent bass sound and introspective lyrics reflecting the world's current state.

The standout track, "Burn Down Babylon," tells a true story of a bar brawl in California, while "Please Come Here" features Japanese vocals, a nod to their frequent tours in Japan. The album also includes a cover of Ween's "She Wanted to Leave," as a tribute to a friend who passed away from cancer.

Overall, Peanut unfolds like a string of fascinating clouds, each song carrying its own unique electric charge.
