Phren is the third release in Opale, a series from Maple Death and Canicola Edizioni exploring the meeting point of music, images and narrative. Each release pairs an LP and illustrated book in a limited box set with posters and unique designs.
This edition brings together Marta Salogni and Stefano Pilia with a 32-page singer stitch illustrated book by Sarah Mazzetti, whose work spans drawing, publishing and visual storytelling, with credits including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Die Zeit and The Guardian.
A structure rises from the water, suspended between architecture and landscape, reflection and depth. Inside, another space opens up for listening, isolation and encounter, forming the imagined setting for this first collaboration between Salogni and Pilia.
Phren unfolds as a layered sound work, built from Pilia's abstract guitar and Salogni's tape machine manipulations. Signals pass through modular processing, filtering, tape echo and Revox machines, turning sound into a living, shifting architecture where memory, repetition and resonance continuously reshape the source.
