Prelude to a Kiss and More catches Irène Schweizer in peak form, recorded live in Zurich in February 1986. With exuberance, improvisational flair, a powerful touch and real style, it stands as a high point in her catalogue and a vivid snapshot of her solo voice.
Fresh from a six-month stay in New York, Schweizer moves between her own pieces and works by Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and Duke Ellington. George Lewis described her as an “Afrodiasporic musician” and “post-European,” reflecting how freely she crossed jazz history, South African influence, free jazz and European improvisation.
This landmark solo recording dates from 1986, the year Intakt Records was founded, and now marks the Zurich label’s 40th anniversary.
