Rhythms Unexplained

Rhythms Unexplained is the debut solo album from Cincinnati psych-rock musician Charlie Horn, guitarist and vocalist in In The Pines. These sturdy rock songs sometimes lean country, but Horn surrounds them with shimmering vintage synths, salvaged and rebuilt by his own hand, plus deep layers of guitar that give the record a glowing sense of light.

Across the album, Horn works through a deeply personal loss that hangs over much of the writing. If you connect with unflinching pop records like Conor Oberst's Ruminations or Big Star's Third, there is a clear kinship here, especially in the way careful sound design meets emotional directness.

There is plenty of what makes In The Pines so distinctive, with Horn's gift as a sound-sculptor pushed right to the front. But emotionally, this feels even more personal, tuned to frequencies that seem entirely his own.
