About Wide Receivers

Like most creative endeavours, Wide Receivers was born of a combination of an overactive mind, boredom and a desire to make something if not exactly new, but something useful. With a focus on using sustainable, durable materials, Wide Receivers is designed and made by hand in my home studio in Leith, Scotland. I want my products to last, so a wide range of tough, sustainable fabrics are used, from ripstop nylon and cotton, to X-pac, a light and highly water-resistant fabric frequently used in backpacks.

Having lived and worked in Leith since 1999, I'm always keen to use Scots argot - and perhaps impenetrable humour - in the naming of WR products. The Hingwae, for example, is a word we'd use to describe a "thing", since it's not always obvious why you'd need a water-resistant 30g pouch in your life, until you get one, and then you know. "Ah, it's a hingwae, for carryin' hings!"

As WR develops, I'm expanding my range into locally-produced apparel, leaning on and learning from Leith-based artist pals to create new pieces, as well as introducing 100% recycled materials wherever possible - the third iteration of the Hingwae pouch now has a 100% post-consumer waste outer. I'll also be using waxed fabrics produced in Dundee to produce new hings.

I'd like to think that DIY ethos of being a skateboarder and a (too loud) drummer in various bands over the last few decades shares some of the DNA of Rough Trade, many of whose artists continue to soundtrack my own time spent at the sewing table making WR products. As I write, a honeycomb gold 12" of the new Gruff Rhys is spinning away in the background, perhaps too loudly for the neighbours, but this is Leith and is entirely to be expected.
