Teranga

Teranga, the final album in the trilogy from Wau Wau Collectif, brings this cross-cultural collaboration fully into focus. Named after the Wolof word for welcomeness, hospitality, and shared meeting, it fits a record shaped by connection.

The project began in Toubab Dialaw in 2018, when Arouna Kane and Karl-Jonas Winquist first imagined it. Files moved over WhatsApp for years, drawing in friends and collaborators, leading to Yaral Sa Doom (2021), Mariage (2022), and now Teranga, finished during their first European tour.

Written and performed by 26 songwriters and musicians, the album spans balafon, ngoni, calabasse, violin, cello, saxophone, and omnicord. Oh, Africa carries an almost Turkish guitar riff, while 100 ans, their first live studio recording, recalls early 2000s Amadou et Mariam. Karl-Jonas also cites Barney Wilen’s Moshi as inspiration.
