“We began Birdwar Records in order to release this album. What seemed like a slightly reticent David agreed to work with us, and we enlisted the help of Ross and Simon from Ghost Town Studios to record it. We selected an old church hall near to where we lived in Leeds 6 for the recording rather than a studio setup. We’d first seen David perform in a similar space and so wanted to retain something of that with this session. The setup for recording was kept simple, our only real wish being to try and capture David’s current set at the time, an early far less performative version of what would become his brilliant and unpredictable live shows.
The decision was made to record it live, no overdubs, minimal post production. Sitting in on the recording was a beautiful thing to witness, a once in a lifetime moment. There were a few mistakes, moments of fragility and honesty, but these are what the real world is full of. We
decided not to record a second take, it was done, a wonderfully imperfect document with just the right amount of insufficiency."
- Luke Drozd and Drew Millward, Birdwar Records.
