The Joy Of Sing-Sing

More than two decades on, The Joy of Sing-Sing feels less like a cult footnote and more like a lost gem of British independent music. Formed after the end of Lush, Emma Anderson and Lisa O'Neill built something entirely their own: understated, cinematic and quietly addictive.

Working with producer Mark Van Hoen, the duo left shoegaze behind in favour of shimmering electronics, hypnotic melodies and beautifully restrained vocals. Early singles Feels Like Summer, I Can See You and I'll Be hinted at its world, while the 2001 album delivered a set of elegant songs that never chased trends.

From Everything and Command to Panda Eyes and Underage, this is sophisticated alternative pop with real emotional depth, including a tribute to Chris Acland. Long admired by those who found it first time round, it still sounds fresh, immersive and beautifully crafted.
