Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood was only 14 when Welsh guitarist Spencer Davis spotted him playing organ in a Birmingham pub with his older brother, Muff. After forming The Spencer Davis Group together, they set the pace for British R&B bands in the mid-60s, topping the UK charts in early 1966 with a cover of Jackie Edwards' reggae favourite Keep On Running. The group returned to the Edwards songbook for their next No.1, Somebody Help Me, at which point Steve and Muff began to seek support elsewhere: the former hiring musicians to help him form his own band, Traffic, the latter as an A&R man at Island Records.
Though it covers just two short years, The Winwood Broadcasts 1965-1967 documents a giant leap in UK pop music, with the beloved original Spencer Davis Group line-up performing some of their earliest hits on European TV.
