One of the stellar recordings of the jazz-rock fusion era is the 1974 album Thrust by Herbie Hancock. This album showcased Hancock concocting multi-rhythmic, deep groove music, with squawking, scratching, stuttering, pulsing arp electronic keyboards, fender rhodes, clavinet, and more.
The collaboration with Paul Jackson on thrumming, wah-wahing bass, added to Mike Clark's straight-up, rock-solid, propulsive drumming, created a unique sound that became a fusion classic. Bennie Maupin also brilliantly deployed several horns in spare, soulful, and otherworldly ways on this album.
