nu-disco compilation featuring all the hottest names including friendly fires, serge santiago, plugs, lindstrom, hercules and love affair from cool labels tirk, bearfunk and italians do it better. people in the sky is now on its twelfth release and it feels like the musical landscape is changing as the heat around disco starts to bleed into dark corners of the indie underworld, and brave new hybrids start to emerge, skirting around the fringes of post punk, white boy funk, kraut cosmonica and disco's inbuilt hedonism. it starts with the timeless italo of tantra's 1981 classic 'a place called tantra', moves confidently through the strutting disco-rave of mock and toof's mix of friendly fires' 'photobooth' , sashays through forty thieves 2008 vocal classic 'don't turn me on', and then drifts off into space via john daly's mix of beppe loda's 'egotrya' / the diaphanoids 'weightless motionless' and holy ghosts's anthemic mix of they came from the stars' 'moonsong'. it swoops back to earth with the deep disco-froideur of chromatics 'after dark', struts around lindstrom's botswana bedouin, and then straps on the floor burners with optimo's mix of colder and metal on metal's take on wax stags epic 'short road', before closing out with heartbreaks' sizzling electro-disco rework of plugs 'bodyheat', and finally, the diaphanoids glorious slo-mo, lazer guided re-jig of snorkel's 'dust to dust'. seventeen tracks in total - lots of space, lots of songs, lots of grooves, and hopefully something a bit different for burn out new ravers, disco freaks and indie refugees alike.
