Vigils was Birkin’s first album under his own name, following years of releasing and touring as Emphemetry, as well as part of The Little Explorer and cult punk band Crash of Rhinos. Originally released by Reveal Records in 2016, the critically-acclaimed album was never released on vinyl, until now. Centred around hushed pianos recorded in the old mills of the Derwent river in Derbyshire, with string quartets and subtle electronics opening up into wide-eyed cinematic wonder, the compositions soon started cropping up on the big and small screens. Most notably, Night Sun appeared in two episodes of The Young Pope (starring Jude Law), while Vigil V soundtracked a key moment in the Silvio Berlusconi biopic Loro.
The album has been remastered for vinyl by Taylor Deupree (12K). The album was pressed onto ECOVIN bio-vinyl in the UK, while the artwork was printed on an old Heidelberg hydraulic printing press onto premium Fedrigoni card stock by Legno in Milan. The artwork has been adapted for the printing process, and features a double sided inlay.
