One of several French rock groups signed by BYG Records in the early 70s, Coeur Magique had a notably idiosyncratic approach to songwriting and arranging that reflected the ambition of its founder Claude Olmos. A skilled multi-instrumentalist he wrote songs that were sometimes epic, allowing room for lengthy passages of improvisation and interplay among musicians who also performed at a high level. Wakan Tanka is an electric album with the kind of heavy, at times hard-hitting sound that largely defined the music of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, both important role models for Claude Olmos. Leading a band that features bassist Didier Lessage, drummer Laurent Marino and vocalist Harry Seur, Claude Olmos plays guitar and often enhances his This newly remastered version of Wakan Tanka provides an opportunity to hear one of the most original acts from the BYG’s roster of rock groups, which, a good half century after it came into being, is still largely unknown to many listeners. Coeur Magique made quirky and fascinating music that deserves greater recognition these days and is sure to please all rockers.
