The Cat’s Miaow began in 1992 as a home-recording duo, with Bart Cummings and Andrew Withycombe making songs on Withycombe’s four-track. Soon joined by Kerrie Bolton and Cam Smith, they spent five years quietly shaping their sound in suburban Melbourne.
Long treasured in pop circles, their gentle indiepop first reached the world through 7” singles, cassettes and compilation appearances. After two warmly received compilations on World of Echo, the band regrouped for shows and new music, leading to When You Smiled And Turned Away, remarkably their debut studio album.
It keeps everything that makes The Cat’s Miaow so special: elegant, spare songwriting from Bart Cummings and Andrew Withycombe, Cam Smith’s brushed drums, and the celestial soprano of Kerrie Bolton. Fourteen songs in just over half an hour, it is warm, wistful and beautifully concise.
