Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads (33 1/3)

Driving through Oklahoma’s panhandle, with its flat horizons and old nickname No Man’s Land, it’s still easy to picture the Dust Bowl. The dust has long settled, and the Woody Guthrie Center opened in Tulsa in 2013, later joined on the same block by Bob Dylan’s archives.

But Guthrie’s writing on migration, environmental ruin, and trying to survive under a government working against you still lands hard. This book looks at Dust Bowl Ballads in its own time, and traces how its storytelling and activism helped expand ideas of what an album could do.

It draws on the author’s visits to key Guthrie sites and includes interviews with artists engaging with the album’s legacy, including a graphic novelist who reworked Dust Bowl Ballads into a visual journey through his own life. Beyond This Land Is Your Land, this first major commercial release remains central to Guthrie’s impact.
