Kyuss’s 1991 debut, Wretch, captures the desert rock pioneers before their signature sound had fully solidified. Raw, abrasive and occasionally awkward, it offers an intriguing glimpse of a young band discovering how to turn heavy metal, punk energy and thick grooves into something distinctive.

Josh Homme’s guitar already possesses a recognisable weight, while John Garcia’s powerful vocals cut through the murky production with authority. Brant Bjork’s drumming supplies an instinctive swing, hinting at the rhythmic freedom that would become central to the group’s finest recordings.

“Son of a Bitch” is a highlight, allowing the band room to settle into a grinding, hypnotic groove. “Katzenjammer” and “Black Widow” favour a more immediate attack, their rough edges reflecting the musicians’ youthful aggression. Elsewhere, the songs can feel crowded, with the recording struggling to convey the physical force of the performances.

That limited production is the album’s main weakness: riffs that should flatten everything sometimes sound boxed in. The songwriting also lacks the consistency and spaciousness of Blues for the Red Sun.

Nevertheless, Wretch has an unruly appeal of its own. Best approached as an energetic starting point, it documents the foundations of Kyuss’s sound with enough conviction to make its imperfections worthwhile.
